Next week, I’m going on my first hiking/campout trip on the Sipsey River Trail in Alabama. I will last from a Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. I’m looking for tips on what all to take. Here is what I have so far:
Light tent
sleeping pad
sleeping bag
hiking backpack with hydration bladder
compass
portable cooking pan/pot plate and silverware (like boy scouts use)
As for meals – what is recommended? I have seen these "just add boiling water" meals in the bag that are about at walmart. I have had one before at a campout and it was tasty. Is that fine for dinners? How about breakfast and lunch – cook over a fire or just eat granola bars or something like that?
As for clothing, what is normal to wear? Jeans, shorts, etc…? Thermal underwear? How many pairs of socks – and are they special socks or just normal socks?
As for water, do you just take a lot of water bottles or do you use some sort of filtration setup and use river/creek water?
Any more tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

I’m doing something called ‘Operation Escape’ with Scouts, where we go hiking alone in Cleveland for three days and try to avoid being ‘captured’ by the leaders. It’ll just be me and my boyfriend hiking and camping together, so I’m worried that we might forget something.
We’ve got a sleeping bag, tent, first aid kit, food, torch and a stove ect.
Is there anything else I might need?

I am an experienced distance hiker, but I’ve never pitched a tent in the snow before. I’ll be hiking around Slovakia over Christmas and New Years. I can dress warmly enough, but is there a specific kind of tent I need to buy? Or sleeping bag? And anything else I should think about?
Advice from experienced outdoorsmen much appreciated!

Is there an brand known more then others for having virutally indestructible gear. I am in need of boots, socks, pants, shirt, hiking pack, tent, sleeping bag.
I know brands like North Face and others are heavily marketed but are those what the pros use.
For example what kind or gear do the real deal hikers and extended campers use?
Thanks
this site seems to have everything one would need…but clothes..and the selection is not overwhelming like other sites. so if anyone wants to take a look around and make some recommendations that would be swell

Ok here’s the scoop…
I want to get into hiking and camping with my wife. I currently have no gear. What should I buy? I have about 0 to work with. I am planning on camping through 3 seasons, spring, summer, and fall (a little in the winter perhaps). I am going to need a two person tent, his and hers sleeping bags, and his and hers backpacks. I am looking for gear that would take me on 2-4 day hikes. Should go with internal or external backpacks. What’s the difference? Is there a good rain resistant tent within my price range? I’m thinking I would want a mummy type sleeping bag. Again, not sure though. Brand names with reasons for purchasing would be much appreciated. Thanks.
I have a sport backpack, which is not designed for hiking.
I am trying to figure out how I can carry my tent on my backpack and how to get a sleeping bag attached to my back too.
Can I use straps or bungee cords? Do I need to buy a special backpack for all of this? I can’t find anything on this on the internet.
I have to bring both the tent and the sleeping bag or I will freeze in October.
Have you ever had a night out with freinds or family that were so terrible you look back on them thinking they were priceless in a good way? For example ages ago me and my friends went camping, and if i remember corectly it was a saturday, and i had been partying since thursday so by the time we were all walking up to the woods i was pretty burnt out. We set up the tent and aranged a camp fire. there was 5 of us and there was only a 2 man tent, wich we didnt think to be an issue till later on. Me and a few m8s went into the tent to hot box it while the rest tended to the fire. By the time i came out the tent i was baked. And due to the sleep deprivation and booze I started to see the most insain stuff like the leaves on the ground being hands and seeing random faces in the bushes and in the tree’s, then i fort back to the film i saw recently called SHROOMS and it really didnt help matters but i tryed to keep my cool ( apart from when i got lost lol) few hours later we decided to bed down, it was unbeliveably cramped and cold and i didnt have a sleeping bag and neither did 3 other people. I batteld on and fort… lets try and sleep. While having a wide range of mad nightmares I woke up to a sound of "drip, drop, drip, drop" and i fort ah its only raining now worrys were in a tent it will pass, while i was shivvering my arse off. Then only to be awoken by a wet feeling on my face and i realised yes , the tent was infact not as waterproof as it boasted and the whole tent began to flood. all 5 of us were laying in about an inch of water. Considering the tempreture it wasnt good, we decided to head off at 6am and i fort the ordeal was over… but… it was far from over for me… i decided to take a different route home from the others to save time but in my hungover and tired/slightly drunk and almost hypothermic state, i took a wrong turn and ended up totaly inbedded in dence forrest in the middle of nowhere, about 4 hours later of falling over and being horribly lost thinking " im gona die" i managed to end up in bletchenly, wich was 3 towns away, i decided to be a man… so I called up the only person I knew who would be awake and sober at this time and could drive… so i called my mummy on reverse call ( dont lauf lol i really had enuff of that day), and forever now I will know… NEVER TO GO CAMPING!!!… but I will remember it for the rest of my life cos of its funness and stupidity lol!! any storys like this guys?
